The fire.
Lightning struck first, and nobody controlled that. But somewhere along the line someone stopped running from it and learned to keep it, then to make it. That changed the species. Fire cooked the food, and cooked food gave up its energy so cheaply that the gut shrank and the brain grew on what was left over. Then it held back the night, and those new hours became the first place a person could put what they knew and have it outlast them.
Every fire since has been the same shape. A tool arrives, and the people curious enough to reach in while everyone else is still deciding whether to are the ones who find out what it does.
Pyrai is fire and AI in one word, because it’s the same event. Every time a capability like this arrives, people fear it first and then live inside it forever after. Fire, writing, electricity, flight. The fear was always the smaller half of the story. This isn’t a new tool arriving inside a civilisation. It’s the kind of thing a civilisation gets once, and reorganises itself around afterwards. Nobody warming their hands at the first fire had a concept of a rocket engine, and yet that’s the same line, followed far enough. Every previous fire delivered things its discoverers had no language for, and there’s no reason to think this one is different.
Who’s
holding it.
I’m one person, and that isn’t something to apologise for. It’s the thesis. For most of history, ambition at this scale needed a company, a budget, and permission. Now it needs three things, and none of them can be bought.
Taste
Judgment
Restlessness
01
Taste
Knowing which of ten thousand possible things is worth making. It comes from making enough poor things to recognise a good one early. Every one of those leaves a scar, and the scars are the knowledge. Nobody builds judgment out of success. You build it from the specific memory of how something failed and why you didn’t see it coming.
02
Judgment
Following a consequence past the obvious answer to where it actually lands. Most people stop at the first plausible conclusion. The useful thing is almost always two or three moves further down, and getting there is unglamorous work.
03
Restlessness
Knowing what’s arriving next, which is the only real form of foresight there is. I read frontier research the way other people read the news. Not for novelty, but for the moment a capability crosses a line and something impossible last quarter becomes a thing you could build by Friday.

What’s around the corner.
Nobody knows. Not the labs, not the people writing about them, not me. The distance between impossible and ordinary is measured in months now, and it’s still shrinking.
You can read that as a reason to wait until things settle, or as the best argument there has ever been for standing closer. Nobody who waited ever found out what a fire does.
Creation in the hands of the curious.
